Which sewing machine?

I will be having my 40th birthday in a few weeks and have asked for a sewing machine but don't know where to start in looking at which one to get. Any ideas? I would like to be able to make my own clothes and have a go at freehand machine embroidery.

is there an independent shop or John Lewis with machines nearby that you can play with?? The world's your oyster.

Make a list of everything you think you'll want to do with it - even if you think it'll be a couple of years before you get around to it or become sufficiently skilled. Then set yourself a budget, research models within it and find the ones that tick as many boxes as possible :)

In general, I'd say they're expensive things and you should get something you can grow in to rather than something that "will do". Those £99 machines are a false economy imho, as you'll want to replace it in a year.

I totally agree with Snowgoose, get a machine that you raise your game rather than limit you as you get better. It'll absolutely be worth the extra money.

Sew Mama Sew has a guide to buying a new machine, which includes a checklist of questions to ask. I used this when I was researching a new machine last year and it was really helpful in making sure I'd covered everything, especially as I tended to forget things when I was actually talking to the sales assistant.

Also, if you're buying from an independent retailer, ask whether they offer "getting to know your machine" sessions - a lot do, for free if you buy from them. So you don't need to be intimidated by a machine that offers more possibilities than you currently need - you can get to know it with help and at your own pace. Independents often also offer good guarantees and service too (though John Lewis is obviously good for that as well). Don't be afraid to ask if you can have a go before you buy, too.

I got (back) into sewing a couple of years ago with basically the same idea as you, some clothes and a bit of simple 'fun' - I'm now totally addicted and have made so many things I never thought I could (the internet is a fantastic teacher!). Go for it!

I've got this one and it's really easy to use. Also has autotension which you normally only get with more expensive machines (apparently)... But is really useful.
