Where's good for buying wool online?

I've only bought wool from John Lewis or hobby craft before. Not sure they're great value/ choice.

Where do you get your wool online?
Is eBay worth a look?

If you know what you want, ebay is worth a look but you can't always get the quantities and colours you are after.

You are right, JL and Hobbycraft are expensive and you can get yarn a lot cheaper than that.

This is my local yarn store and great. They have a bit of a discount on everything. Since I can walk here I haven't used their mail order but they are worth a look.
Loop are great for top of the range and unusual stuff.
Masons are good at the other end of the scale, for the budget stuff. I have bought from them before and their service is good. No postage charge and quick delivery.

There are others which I can't remember at the moment.

Black sheep wool here (delivery not free but is cheap )and McA here both good. McA free delivery on a £10 spend. Had a great bargain from black sheep last week on some Sublime yarn.

Also like hejhog they have good offers but delivery sometimes slow, great customer service though and bargain pattern books. Free delivery over £24, good mix of some posh yarns and budget stuff - artesano, dublime, king cole.

ebay is worth a look, but the only downside is that you don't get to fondle touch the stuff beforehand. My local market has a brilliant stall that stocks every kind of wool you can think of, from nasty squeaky acrylic to virgin mermaid beard. I searched everywhere on the internet for some linen 4ply, only to find it there, far cheaper than other sites. I tend to buy what I like the look of, rather than something I've tried and tested, so the stall works for me.

Maybe have a look for local markets etc to see if there's anything near you?

Hejhog's good but the choice is limited; I usually go to Stash Fine Yarns (www.celticove.co.uk)

I use yarnbox, but there's a local lady who's just opened an online yarn store that I intend to try

They are reasonable in price, they let you know when something is out of stock, their delivery is very swift indeed and you can usually find a promotion code in a magazine. I LOVE Deramores. In fact I wish I was connected to Deramores for staff discount purposes. They have been brilliant with me.

I also go for ebay. If you are just going for random sort of fancy-knitting-a-scarf yarn, or you are clear what you want then you can get some great stuff. There is a shop on there called Yarn Paradise that does yarn from Turkey (ice yarns). It is mainly weird scarf yarn, but although the postage is grievous, the yarn is inexpensive and the service has been good for me.

The other shop on ebay I have used regularly, with excellent service and prices, is Afan Crafts. But I usually only buy cheap yarn because I am a cheapskate.

If you are looking for really great quality, slightly more expensive wool at a great price, try Texere. I have actually been to their warehouse and they LOVE their yarn and really know their stuff. They are really good for the luxury stuff and some of the Yorkshire Mohair is on my wish list.

I have used kemps a couple of times and received the items quick and a at a good price aswell

I noticed wannabesybil's mention of Afan Crafts' ebay shop, I've also enjoyed their prices and excellent service number of times. But I heard recently from Lesley that she had set up her own site and shop at www.afancrafts.co.uk. Bought from there just last week, same fanastic service I enjoyed on ebay and I as able to give Lesley a ring to check she had the dye numbers I needed to finish a project before ordering, which was a real plus :)

Blacksheepwool online for definate. I live near the shop and its just divine!!!

Please avoid Angel Yarns.

I ordered from them a few times, but the last order was never delivered and all attempts to get them to refund my payment were ignored.

I also know of another MN poster who had the same experience . Steer clear.
