thread to use for general machine sewing

I have just got a new sewing machine and have not used one since schooldays (40 plus years ago)Could somebody advise on thread to buy for general purpose machining.

you'll find the 900m spools of stretch polyester are the best & best value too-

if you intend to sew a lot, I'd recommend buying basic colours like black, white & cream, maybe pink or blue if sewing for kids in bulk boxes, as it works out a lot cheaper - check e-bay sellers etc & I also pick up cheap odds & sods of colours in the sewing thread sale box they tend to have near the til in good fabric shops/haberdashers

thankyou rockinhippy.Have been trawling through the threads for info as I'm completely new to sewing apart from making an apron for domestic science at school and a wincyette.Stupidly expressed a yen for a sewing machine when hemming a dress and low and behold received one for my birthday .I'm now commited or will be if I don't figure things out.
