Help please! 70's fancy dress outfit needed for DS. What can I make!?

It is DS1's school is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and they are having a party on Friday. DS's year have to dress up in 70's costume and I am struggling to find anything that will fit on the fancy dress sites. He is too big for the children's stuff and too small for adults.

Any ideas what I can make would be much appreciated.

No idea, but it made me laugh, because ds celebrates his birthday today and he was born in 1977. I'm sure little boys did not wear much else than they do now, apart from maybe they went to school in grey shorts and shirt with a school tie.

I have an old school photo of me in a blue paisley shirt (same school - I was there at the start of it) with my navy skirt and royal blue knitted cardie.

It wouldn't be allowed now, of course, but when you mentioned the uniform it occurred to me that times had changed a bit for girls. Quite what came over my mother buying that thing I don't know. I remember it was nylon too.

I think my brothers shorts were a lot shorter than the ones they wear now too! Actually maybe that is an idea. Find a blue tie, button up shirt rather than polo shirt and take his shorts up. Ha! He would love that!!

70s glam -

take old plain tee shirt & paint a big brightly coloured typically 70s motif on it - you known lips, rainbow heart etc - lots if you google images or even just splash paint bright colours onto it if you are not confident with artsy stuff

old pair of jeans or pants & add a triangle of a bright or floral cloth into the side seams from the hem to the knees to make flares

mess his hair up - bangles - strings of long beads & chain & a feather boa to finish off

70s punk

Shaving foam onto his hair & form into spikes

old tee shirt cut to look ripped up & add safety pins

buy a screw in earing findings from a bead or craft shop& mage a big safety pin earing

old pair of black or dark combat pants, or if not dark jeans

bit of leopardskin cloth or same colour as trousers cut into a half mon shape bigger than his bum - attach to back of pants with kilt pins or big safety pins

black eyeliner

Wow thanks rockinhippy. Some great ideas. I was looking at all the pictures of satin shirts and Saturday night fever suits or tassled waistcoats and thinking I don't have the time or the money so you have saved my bacon.

I should have thought of tie dye - DS did that last year at school but I like the idea of painting a t-shirt too. I think I could manage some lips and it is another excuse to go to Hobbycraft too! A win win situation.

Better ask DS whether he wants to be a punk first though. That sounds quite fun especially as they are doing We Will Rock You as a school play and he had to have a black ripped t-shirt (which I had to buy just so they could rip) for that - a few safety pins and some chains would be different from all the outfits for sale. I wonder if DS will be happy to put on black eye liner?

get a pair of ordinary girls' trousers that are cut curvily and with a flare - when you put them on a boy the overall effect is very 70s, particularly if they're corduroy.

Thanks Sybil - I am off to Sainsburys - I shall see what they have in the girls' clothes dept. Should be interesting - I don't normally get to go in the girls bit!
