How/where do you learn to sew clothes like they do on Project Runaway?

... without studying fashion design for three years that is ..???

Or is that the only way?

I do a bit of basic dress-making but I'm intrigued by the way they all start by pinning some sort of banding on their mannequins and then pinning the material to it rather than using a paper pattern.

And then of course there is the making everything in muslin first.

Would love to learn.

i make my own patterns by drawing round existing clothes then adding or taking away to get the shape I want

Have found these but £££££ and don't deliver to mainland Europe where I'm based. (They must be available here somewhere I guess.)

Have looked at all your links this morning. Am starting to get a better idea of what is involved. I had no idea you drape the muslin, THEN use that to make paper pattern. Will definitely peruse Amazon for some more books on the subject.
