New to sewing...Help

Right I have decided I need a hobby have bought a sewing machine and have decided I will make a pillowcase dress for one of the DD's.
Silly question but can I just buy cotton or is there a certain type for dresses ??

you'd be best to go to a shop and get a feel of the fabric before you start buying online. some cotton will be very thick, upholstery type material.

Do you mean thread. Cotton is good for cotton fabrics. You can also get polycotton and polyester thread. Polycotton good allroundrer for man made fabrics.
