best toddler crayons

Title says it all really. Im looking for toddler crayons for my 20 month old dd.
I was thinking of wax, not too esaily breakable, in a range of colours, easy to grip and make a mark even if you dont do a proper pencil hold on them. My dd already has some crayons that snap esaily and make only a faint mark if she doesnt press down hard. I realise that felt tips would be the answer to not having to press down hard but then you'd need a proper pencil hold. Pencil crayons are also too feint. Help - Im going round in circles!

Give him felt tips. I know people think they are too messy, but they are much more fun- bright colours, easily spread. Our kids had them instead of crayons, and would never use crayons because the colours are so much less vivid. After kids get over the initial excitement, they quickly learn to use them, and if you buy children's ones, they won't stain or be toxic anyway. They will learn a proper pencil hold very fast--

I'm wary of giving crayons to my 21mo because he chews them. You don't need a proper pencil hold with felt tips - DS1 managed fine with a palmar grip till about 4. You can get the triangular ones if you want to encourage a proper grip though.

The ELC basics range do a box of chubby crayons and there are about 40 in there (a few of each colour). I found them really good and not at all chewable!

Fat Crayola or ELC. Never buy cheapo crayons. They don't work.

Strike - they look eminently chewable to me - not even any wrappers to contend with! ;)

They are quite hard though cornflakegirl .

the crayola first marker felt tips are great - rounded nibs so they make marks easily, and they wash off. which is VERY useful indeed! especially when your 20 month old suddenly decides to scribble all over mummy with the red pen, and mummy forgets to wash it off, so daddy gets home and screams 'what the fuck happened to your throat?' because he thought mummy had been slashed. so it was good to be able to wash that off with water :o

I think I read somewhere that triangular crayons are best for developing the correct grip for when your DD starts writing.

OTOH, as far as colours go, I really like these stockmar beeswax crayons - we have the block ones and the colours are really bright and lovely. They were a present though from our steinery friends, and I'm not sure I'd shell out 9 quid on 8 crayons. That said, we got them years ago and they're still going strong. As they're blocks, they don't break as easily as sticks so perhaps that's partly why they've lasted so well.

I popped out yesterday and got some crayola flip top washable markers and so far theyre are working quite well, she enjoys them but Ive yet to see whether they are truly washable...
I think Im going to order those sotockmar beeswax ones today - the review said theyre really vibrant colours, and they should last a few years too. Im thinking that theres a lot of arts/crafts type activities to come so I dont mind too much what I spend as long as its not a waste of money.

I second the Crayola first markers, they say they rinse off without soap, and they really do!!
