How do I make an Austrian style waistcoat for dd?

We are going to sing a long Sound of Music tomorrow Smile

Of course I've left it to last minute to sort out a costume for dd. We went to a fancy dress place today (after phoning loads of others!). She wants to be one of the Von Trapp children and they best they had was a costume that's supposed to be Red Riding Hood.

So she's got a red/white gingham skirt and sort of gathered white top. It looks ok but needs something else. I thought I'd make her a waistcoat with criss cross ties at the front if you see what I mean..?

Does anyone have any ideas how to do this? Is it easy? Or any other tips what I could add to her costume...?

Brown suede for the waistcoat or black heavy cotton/canvas....pulled up socks....pig tails?
