Crocheting in 3-d

I can crochet, but I can't read a pattern and I don't remember what most of the stitches are called.

I made a hat for dd by spiraling in granny stitch: 4 trebles, one single, etc, doing the trebles around the single, just like making a granny square. For the rolled brim I made the grannies into bobbles by doing 1 double, 2 quadruple, 1 double.

My question is, how do I make a pompom or tassel for the hat which echoes the bobbles?
