help me pearl please

im having problems with pearling (am a novice knitter) i think im switching the sides round thus ending up with a few rows pearled then a few revearsed iyswim? how can i tell wich side to have it?

If you are doing a pattern that is Stocking Stitch, which is a conventional finish, similar ,to many jumpers you can buy, the 'wrong' side of the work will have a 'wavy line' pattern on it. You need to purl while this wrong side is in view, and knit on the smooth side. Is that what you are asking?

If you are still having trouble join Ravelry (Ravelry.com) and see if there is a knitting group near you. (Go to Groups and type in the place you live) Nothing like someone to actually show you what to do.
Other places to find someone to show you are your local woolshop or a women's church group.

oh oh oh this is soo frustrating im knitting one row then pearling the next and so on but its just coming out looking like garter stitch were am i going wrong? iv wathced some on you tube and i swear im doing it to the letter but with no avail

Are you doing them the wrong way round? You should be knitting on the smooth side, purling on the rough side. do you need to undo it, so you're not confusing yourself with the knitting you've done already?

When you are knitting you should get little v's on the side you are knitting on like this vvvvvvvvv
When you are purling you should little hoops on the side you are knitting on, a bit like this ~~~~~~~ and the vvvvv are on the other side.
When you are knitting you have the thread at the back of the work and go into the stitch from the left to the right. When you are purling you have the thread at the front and go into the stitch from the right to the left
As sloggies says, you should start over again so as not to confuse yourself with what is the right and the wrong side.
