When I first tried knitting socks, the patterns I had turned the heel in mitred stocking stitch (thanks, zisforzebra and BornToFolk 
). All the patterns I now find have the back of the heel ribbed. Why is this? Is it because ribbing is easier to make, or more comfortable to wear?
