A question regarding granny squarres.

I am thinking of crocheting a pillow case for my DS (5) (just to decorate his bed). Do you think granny squares are good for this project? I have tried to crochet the squares recently for the first time. I had to start it from the centre and then work in rounds making a square from little squares; the square was getting bigger and bigger. Is it always like that or can you make a chain and then crochet horisontally? For instructions I used Crochet Unravelled book.

Just like this www.purlbee.com/granny-square-project/2007/4/12/classic-granny-square-pattern.html

But I had to start from the flower first.

You can make a 'granny square' just as big as you like, just keep going round until it is big enough. Or you can do several and then sew or crochet them together.

they do look good if you join a number of squares together to make a cover, especially if you use a variety of different colours for each square. As you get more adept you can do different colours on each round.

You can do granny stripes attic24.typepad.com/weblog/granny-stripe.html which are just as easy as squares, you can then make it to the dimensions you want.

Thank you DutchOma and kellestar! I will try a little bit of both and see what is easier and faster. I am glad that it is possible to crochet the squares horizontally. Many thanks again.

Saw a 'granny square' blanket today, double bed size. The lady who asked for advice did no end of crocheting years ago, but had forgotten how to do it. She just wanted to finish the wool she had and we did it in just half an hour. Very satisfying.
