Anyone tried braiding?

I went to a craft workshop yesterday and tried my hand at Japanese braiding. We were all given a round braiding disc and it is amazing how it works. We all managed to make a round braid but I want to try to do a flat one which could be used as a bookmark.
Anyone got any tips to pass on please?

Kumihimo? It is not really possible to make this into a flat braid, but there are other flat types of braiding you can do, but not using a wheel like that. Just search flat braiding on google for ideas.
