Half double/treble (uk) crochet - do I skip the first stitch in a row?

I can't remember whether I skip the first stitch of a row when doing hdc or htr(uk term). Anyone know?

I have a follow up question: I'm looking a my row (well it's a round). In the previous row I ss into the chain the in the new row I've done 1ch. There is a loop or a stitch either side of that, are they both stitches to be crocheted into? Or just one, if so which one? I can't think what I normally do but I know that sometimes I try crocheting into the last stitch which I guess is the ss and sometimes I struggle to get me hook in which makes me think I shouldn't be crocheting into it and should be skipping it. Is this making any sense?

Does this help?

Bumperlicious, i have been asking the myself the same question! I know when i did the first row you go into the third chain (i think, i'm new at crochet!), but i wasn't sure whether i should keep doing that. Anyway, i haven't and it looks ok. I've no doubt that i've got it wrong though! Will be watching this with interest. Hope you find your answer.

Bumper.. I've found instructions in stitching book. UK terminology (wish it was standard terms for UK and US, i get so confused!):

SINGLE CROCHET (SS):
Start Make a foundation row of chains, insert into 2nd chain from hook.
End Make a turn chain, turn work and insert hook through back half of first stitch in row below to make 1st slip stitch

DOUBLE CROCHET (DC):
Start Make foundation row of chains and insert into 2nd chain from hook, yarn over...
End Make a turn chain, turn work and insert hook through both halves of the 1st stitch in the row below to make the first DC.

HALF TREBLE (HTR):
Start Yarn over, Insert hook through back of 3rd chain from the hook...
End Make 2 turn chains, turn work, make first HTR into 1st stitch in row below. Continue this way for all following rows.

TREBLE (TR):
Start Yarn over, Insert hook through back of 5th chain from hook
End Make 3 turn chains, turn work, make first TR into 2nd stitch in row below

DOUBLE TREBLE (DTR):
Start Yarn over twice, insert hook back of 6th chain from hook
End Make 4 turn chains, turn work, make first DTR into 2nd stitch in row below

TRIPLE TREBLE (TRTR)
Start Yarn over x3,insert hook through back of 7th chain from hook
End Make 5 turn chains, turn work, make first TRTR into 2nd stitch in row below.

Hope this helps - this is just from a book, i don't really know what i'm doing yet!

Thanks that's a great help. I love crochet! I'm just a bit crap at following patterns!

I'm a total newby, but i really like it. I've printed off loads of patterns, but then struggle to follow them - i have the same trouble as you do i think! Good luck. ps what are you making? I'm making a bag but i can tell i've gone wrong on the sides as the top part has expanded out a bit! So useless...!
