Decorating a matchbox-any ideas?

My dd's (5 and 3) have to decorate a matchbox each for a sponsored school event. I am hopeless with art and craft. Anyone got any ideas for what on earth we might do? I have done lots of googlings and come up with nothing. I am hoping an arty mn'er can help me out here!

It's not something I've ever made. Could you use matches for legs?
I would just stick loads of fluff on then stick eyes down one end. they're not going to be expecting masterpieces
(I will admit to having turned a potato into indiana jones complete with hat and whip though Blush )

orange is dd1's favourite colour so that could work! oh these are great ideas! the matchbox has to be filled with stuff so i need to be able to put stuff into it. but all these ideas could work! the best i had was to paint it red with black spots and googly eyes for a ladybird but tehy rejected that idea!

I saw a camera made from matchbox and bits of painted clay and buttons which was impressive
and original.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 18/02/2011 23:11

You could just glue felt on it, cut out a piece to wrap around as background, then make a motif like a flower, star, heart to stick on top.

Or cover with glitter and stick-on gems.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 18/02/2011 23:12

Anything inspirational here?

Paint it one colour and stick old buttons on the top.

Stick a button on the small pull-out so that it can be pulled out like a drawer.

Fill with buttons. It's a button box.

wow. some amazing ideas. thank you all. I have been round the garden with them today collecting 'items from nature' which was our theme for filling them.
