There's a couple of Cath Kidston ones - Sew, and other I can't remember the name of. One of them comes with the pieces to make a bag.

There are loads of websites with simple sewing projects, recommend having a trawl before you lay out on a book.

What sort of stuff are you hoping to make?

This book has lots of information for beginners and some nice projects

Sew a Metre has lots of different projects too.

It might be worth having a look at some of the sewing magazines that are around now. 'Sew' is good for all sorts of projects, some of which are aimed at the beginner but also more advanced stuff too.
