I want to sew through a couple of layers of canvass and batting so I know I am going to need a denim needle. Can my machine take a generic needle? Any advice on what to get?

its going to depend on your machine really, but presuming its a domestic machine, then yes a generic domestic machine needle will fit it....industrial machines have a different shaft to the needle

you need a 16 needle, or 1 marked for denim or heavy cloth.......

if you have 1 of the lightweight modern machines though, you might really struggle with canvas & batting, I tried to use 1 for corsettry....it was a nightmare

It's a janome something or other. I know it might struggle but someone else suggested I just try winding it.
