Any left handed calligraphers out there?

I'm about to start a calligraphy course and just wanted some reassurance really.

When I was at school I was the only left hander in the class most of the time - it was a bit trickier being taught certain things by right handers, although I managed fine on the whole.

I am puff btw

Oh,,,,so very, very !!! I am a left hander and I applied to do a calligraphy course earlier in the year. They rang me the week before it was due to start advising they didn't have enough interest and had to cancel!

Please let me know how you get on!

Puff-Good luck BTW!

fuzzywuzzy · 03/10/2005 18:29

Puff, well my caligraphy is predominantly Arabic and as that's written right to left I think it's easier than when writing in English. although I do write cards in Caligraphy too.

It got easy once I figured out how to hold the pen comfortably, try a lot on your own.

puffinthedark · 03/10/2005 18:31

Gosh, am impressed fuzzy!

Thanks for the advice .

You need left handed Calligraphy nibs.

LadyPuffofRomford · 03/10/2005 18:40

Yes, am hoping they are not lots more expensive than usual nibs.

SoupDragon · 03/10/2005 18:42

The dip pen oes are the same price, I'm sure. They're only cut on a different slant to right handed ones IIRC. (am right handed but did Calligraphy for years with an assortment of left handers. Including one teacher actually - she certainly had no problems!)

LadyPuffofRomford · 03/10/2005 18:44

Great, thanks Soupy. I am really looking forward to starting.

Dingle - are they planning on running the course in the future - they might get enough people on the next one?

SoupDragon · 03/10/2005 18:46

Loved Calligraphy. Sigh. Haven't managed to do any for ages though.

Someone bought me a beautiful Parker Calligraphy set for Christmas last year. I am a left hander to and I find that the nibs scratch so need to get a left handed nib. When I was at Junior school we used to have 'italic writing' twice a week and I didn't have any probs with the right handed teacher showing me. I am not very good though so that could explain it.

Just popping in to say that I read this thread title as 'Any left handed caterpillars out there?'

Good luck with the calligraphy, Pitd!
