Make Do and Mend 1940s costume

My DM has been invited to a "1940s Make Do and Mend" themed party and needs to put together some kind of a costume.

Wondered if any of you lovely MNers have any ideas of what she could do for this, or if you could point me towards any useful websites?

Ideally, we're looking for something relatively simple!
