Preferably nice but not too pricey. shocked by prices in John Lewis, having not crocheted for years, but wanting to make an afghan. Grateful for any recommendations!

Masons are very good for value yarn. Are you familar with the Attic 24 blog? She does loads of crochet and is a big fan of the Stylecraft Special DK which is cheap and cheerful and has loads of colours. I get mine from here.

They don't seem to do loads of fancy yarns though.

This is my LYS They also do mail order and everything is below RRP I believe. You can get the cheaper stuff and the fancy yarns from there. Lovely shop but I haven't used the mail order so I don't know what that is like for that.

I've always found Get Knitted, in Bristol, to be very good.

Kemps is brilliant for bargain yarn. They have really good service too.

Thank you all - I will check these links and the blog sounds very useful - hard finding crochet patterns / inspiration which are not stuck in 1974!

Have you joined Ravelry? It is an excellent site for people who knit or crochet - you can find out about groups in your area or classes etc (I think) and there are loads of patterns, some of them free to download.
