African Wax Print Fabrics...in London?

I'm in need of wax prints and other bright and funky African textiles for a little African exhibition I'm involved in for work. I might be able to travel to London to buy some, and I'm just wondering, will I find them in Brixton market? I know there are little shops in Dalston that sell them, but obv I can't check out Brixton market on the internet and I don't know anyone who's local to Brixton...what might I find there, African textiles wise, if I came? Specifically, kangas, kikois, and or wax prints..... Please help!!

Not sure about Brixton market - although it seems a pretty safe bet - but there is a fab shop near Balham station. Will see if I can find a name/link.

And surely as Mrs Guggenheim you can afford to have them air-freighted over in your private jet anyway? Wink

I think this is it

There are a lot of material shops in Brick Lane, I am sure some sell African Prints, also Petticoat Lane which isn't far from there.

this may help

Not in London, but online - I can really recommend the African Fabric Shop at www.africanfabric.co.uk It's run by a quilting enthusiast who travels regularly to Africa to source fabrics and is passionate about working with different African designs. It's certainly worth a look.

Thanks you guys!

BUT

Oh dear ASmallBunch, you have reminded me why I named myself PeggyGuggenheim. How nice to be her! Except I seem to recall that her parents died on the Titanic, is that right?
Anyway will do some snooping, www.africanfabric shop looks superb for what I'm looking for, merci beaucuop!

Somewhere like Rye Lane in Peckham has that kind of shop, I bought a length once from the shop at the top of Rye Lane/Peckham High St opposite the Peckham Square arch. I just checked on streetview and you can still see the fabrics stacked against the upstairs window, assuming it's not disappeared in the last year.

IIRC it was called "Kumasi Market and it's about 72 Peckham High Street if you look on Google streetview.

I think there are a couple of places on Edgware Rd that sell the kind of thing you're looking for too- if you turn right out of thr station there are a rew places past Jason's.

there are a couple of places on the goldhawk road right by the Goldhawk Road tube station.

Hiya

There is a great selection of shops selling a massive range of African prints in Brixton Village (indoor market) - it's a nice place to check out in any case because a few of the empty units have been given over to small arts/design/homemade food businesses and it's got a really buzzy market feel.

Also, there are a couple of shops in Elephant and Castle shopping centre. But I'd go to Brixton if I were you.

brick lane has many many shops that only sell african wax print fabrics!
