I am feelign a bit crap at the moment. One thing that always helps lift my spirits is to make something.

I have recently commendered a bit of the man-shed as a sewing area. Its lovely but I am faffing about 'sorting' and moving things about instead of getting down to it.

I havent sewn for years and dont have any nice new patterns. Any ideas for a good first project?

A dress or skirt for me would be nice. I am a competent sewer but hate putting zips in. I am saving that for later .

Seen anything nice,simple and wearable?

I am lucky that fabric is very cheap round here although I have to rummage for nice cottons and stretches. I wouldnt mind ordering though.

Thank you .

I'm no good at making clothes - but i love my sewing machine for making crazy patchwork - where you take a bunch of random scraps and sew together. it could work for a skirt maybe? And if you're rubbish at zips - do buttons! I love buttons!

PS. I'm a bit thick - and thought of sewer not a person who sews! doh Blush

I was cheered up immensely recently by cutting old clothes up into 4inch squares with the intention of making a quilt. I now have a nice stack of squares and, although i still have no quilt, feel infinitely better.

LOL at Sewers. I noticed that too late. The thread makes me sound like someone out of a Mitford novel.

I have done a bit of crazy patchwork. It seems almost to easy IYSWIM. I think I am doing it wrong. Maybe I can make some bags for Christmas.

Or will I be one of those aunties who sweat over homemade gifts that have to be dragged out of hiding when I visit Grin

How strange - i've just finished reading the mitford biorgraphy (again!)

No - crazy patchwork is easy... i just thought you might like to start gently!

Love the idea of those christmas pressies being dragged out - you should just do them for people who you know sweat over things like that.... and make the hideous. (oooh - that's evil isn't it)

Ok - what about making a nice skirt to begin with - as skirts are probably easiest to start with - but might need a ZIP Shock!

pluperfect · 26/08/2010 19:51

What about making a bag? You don't have to put a zip in it, but if you do choose to, it is generally a matter of nice, straight lines.

thefirstmrsDeVere · 26/08/2010 20:25

I am leaning towards the bag. But a skirt would be nice. I used to have a two seam elasticated aline pattern. It was so easy.

Then those sort of skirts seemed naff. I have started seeing them in the shops again, they must be back in fashion. I wonder where the pattern is?

Haha about the hidious bags. If I had the time I could make deliberatly digusting ones as a joke and then pull out the lovely ones at the last minute tee hee.

Mind you a teenagers idea of what is hidious/lovely is probably very different from mine.
