DD is 18 months (nearly 19, actually) and loves to look at photo albums of the family and to pick out and name people and objects. The problem is that she's getting a little bit destructive over-enthusiastic - pulling out pictures fixed with corners, peeling off the plastic and pulling out the pictures. Is there anything that's more robust - we could then make her one album and hide pack the others away until she's a bit older

(it's just occurred to me that I could get them printed onto paper and then laminate them...) other suggestions would be more than welcome

you can laminate photos, double sided if you like. Then punch a hole in the corner & tie all together to make a 'book'.

There's the Galt soft photo album (and a few other manufacturers do similar albums). I suppose you could make similar for yourself if you wanted a bigger album/different layout.
