I am knitting my first big project- a cable knit Cardigan for myself. Have got some gorgeous undyed black alpaca yarn and want some very special buttons to put on the finished garment.
It will take me ages to finish knitting this so I have time to track down the buttons however thus far I'm not having much luck. Any ideas please?

Was in Hobbycraft yesterday.... and spent ages looking at the buttons...didnt need any, but used to like looking in my gran's button box when i was little.... they had some really beautiful ones, also unusal ceramic ones

Is there such a thing as "Art" buttons? Not mass produced. Fairly big in size as they will be on a large chunky Cardigan coat.
I would like Handmade, preferably from the UK or atleast fairtrade.
Material could be anything, though plastic would have to be pretty spectacular, that would be lowest on my list of preferred materials.

Oh these all sound lovely.

I have a HUGE box full of vintage buttons and no idea what to do with them, as a slight tangent!

I think I had better start knitting.

I bought some handmade wooden buttons at a craft fair in mid Wales last winter to put on a chunky cardigan that I was making.

I can't remember the name of the woman who made them though!

If you've got something in mind, I've got a mahoosive range of vintage buttons (I sell them on Etsy, but only have about 5% of what I have listed) - I could have a look through to see if I have anything appropriate for you!

Try www.Injabulo.com - a women's craft project in South Africa, who do some beautiful hand painted ceramic buttons, amongst other sorts.
