CVS - 3rd time next week after 2 Terminations for T21

I'm pregnant for the fourth time (have one DS - almost 4. Pregnacies 2 and 3 resulted in terminations for T21 following definitive diagnosis via CVS for T21. It was the hardest decision of our lives to terminate but in our family circumstances we felt it was the right one us. I'm 40 now (gosh how did that happen!!) and am due for CVS next week - we are skipping the nuchal/blood test as we have been told that my age/past will almost certainly put us at high risk. Anyway I suppose I'm just looking for some positive stories that it might work out this time - part of me thinks if its happened twice its bound to happen again but on the other hand I keep thinking third time lucky. So far my nerve has been quite strong but as the test approaches I can feel it starting to crack a bit. Anyway thanks for listening to my ramble.

Really glad your results were all OK; I'm not surprised you feel a bit strange as it's always so easy to expect the worst, even when given the initial results. I am sure that now you have the full picture (and after your emotions have recovered!) you will be able to be so much more relaxed . Hope all continues to go well.

Makinglists

I haven't posted for a long time but read your thread and I am sooooo thrilled for you and your wonderful news. I hope now you can relax and enjoy what's left of your pregnancy.

My quick history, daughter born in 2001, then in 2006 had a miscarriage at 11 weeks on 23 March 2009 terminated at 18+3 weeks for T21 and had a missed miscarriage in November 2009 at 11 weeks. Last week at 6 weeks I miscarried, reading your message has really given me hope. THANK YOU xxx

Oh Marj, I'm sorry to hear your news - I remember you from the support thread on here. Just to say how sorry I am, and that I hope you are finding strength to get through the days. xx

busierbee · 08/06/2010 23:32

Oh Marjie
This is so sad to hear.
Do not give up hope; you know about Shangrila and others too. Are you taking mega dose folic acid? I am sending you love and strength. I remember your voice so very well from previous sad times.
Hold on tight.
with love

Ladies,

Thanks for your kind wishes. I'm doing okay, I'm sort of getting a bit immune to it all now, I suppose that's one way of dealing with it.

Bee - not on the mega dose folic acid - do you think it makes a difference? Is anyone else taking the mega dose?

Marj, so sorry, it's so bloody unfair.

Many of us take 5mg of folic acid - very often the GPs don't prescribe it if there is no history of a neural tube defect, but my consultant said it can't harm and asked my GP to prescribe it anyway.

Shangrila swears by it, and there is reaserch which says it might even help prevent Down's and other abnormalities - but it is not proven for sure. As far as I understand it is not toxic and what your body doesn't use is excreted - I stand to be corrected on that one.

Holland and Barretts sell 800mcg tablets and you can make up your daily dose from that - I didn't get a chance to collect my prescription so I'm still doing this, so is Monkey. Again, I am sure this is not a wonder remedy and it might not help, but as long as it can't harm, I am taking it even if it's just to have the illusion I am a bit more in control.

Thinking of you xxxx

Just stumbled across this thread by accident but read it and wept with joy for you makinglists like my friend scrummy up there i had a termination for T21 just nearly 3 months ago now like you we have an almost 4yr old DS and i can't imagine going through it again so i am in awe of you coming out the other end and trying again after having it happening to you twice, it always gives me hope listening to stories like yours especially as we are now ttc again, i wish you all the health and happiness in the world! and enjoy your pregnancy swollen ankles and all! XxXxX

Thank you Dramamama - I wish you all the very best in your journey TTC. Its a strange karma sort of thing but when I had the second termination there was this lady in the other bed (she was a retired nurse - it was a general women's ward) and she said to me don't give up hope and I always kept that in the back of my mind even when there were some very dark days. All the very best - thinking of you ML.

I had CVS with first pregnancy and had sadly a termination (which I still think off...).

Got pregnanat again at 39 and gave birth to healthy baby girl when I was 40 years and 1 month old!

By the way nuchal thickness was 3.6.

I wish you from the bottom of my heart that all goes well.

Dear Makinglists, I am so sorry for your and also happy to hear you found the strength to keep to meet your rainbow baby . I did have two consecutive tfmr for t21, and I am interpreting it as a sign nature is sending us. I wonder, however, if you asked for genetic counseling after those sad experiences and what results you did receive. My main fear is that I (or my husband) have a genetic mutation that may make the oddity of trisomy 21 a very likely chance... or worse that we passed this to our daughter. I am 38 , so I guess that age plays a role, but is that so, or is there more? What did doctors tell you after your second tfmr ?
