I've been waiting nearly 3 weeks for the result of my amnio - is this a record ???

I had an amnio on the 6th April and I still haven't got the results. The amniotic fluid was contaminated with blood so the consultant said they 'might' not be able to do the quick test which normally takes 2 to 3 days. Sure enough, they couldn't, and so they said I would have to wait two weeks for the results of the karotype. But by this Tuesday it will be 3 weeks since I had the amnio. The results of my nuchal scan were 1 in 30 so I am going out of my mind with worry. I have phoned the hospital several times and they just keep saying the results aren't back yet. Has anyone else had to wait this long?

Hi Nutella. We got the PCR result back for CVS after 3 days but I was still hanging on for the full report. It took a full 4 weeks to come back. I was panic stricken as the literature said 2-3 weeks. I rang our consultant who said 4-5 week wait was not rare, sometimes cultures are just slow growing (or similar words) but this has no impact on final outcome.

I know how you feel, the time just drags and you pounce on every phone call, every letter through the door. I hope you have news soon, and that it's good.

I know how you feel it is so horrible. We had to wait 4 weeks for our results to come back. Some tests seem to take longer than others. Hope every thing turns out ok.

Thanks for everyone's replies.

Wow - 4 weeks Chica - that is terrible. I take it the news was good though when you finally got it?

It is so frustrating - I feel like I want to phone up and shout at them but there is nothing they can do, it is obviously just growing slowly. Every morning I wake up, feeling sick with nerves, wondering if this will be the day.

Oh well - perhaps today will be the day. I'll let you know.

hi nutella43

this is actually my first post on mumsnet!

i also had an amnio contaminated with blood. it was in france, and they told me 5 weeks, in the end it was 6. i nearly went mad with worry. i think my consultant was particularly crap (still wish i'd made a formal complaint about her) and if your consultant said 2 weeks, certainly it shouldn't be too much longer. i hope you've got some good news now, take care of yourself. some cultures do just grow slow.

Hi MrsRD, thankyou for your post (especially as it was your first one!) I just came back on here to see what was going on. I have been trying to stay away but I just felt I needed to for some reason. Anyway, I don't know if you'll see this reply as it's some time since you posted, but I had the results after 3 weeks and they weren't good. Very sad times. So I am ducking out of the pregnancy forum for a while. Thanks to everyone who tried to reassure me. But in all the statistics they give you, there has to be a 1, and I was the 1.
