Waiting for NIPT results after high-risk 12 week screening

Had my 12 week scan today, and it’s come back high risk for Down syndrome - 1 in 20. I’m fretting so much. I went back for NIPT, but they said results can take up to 1-2 weeks to come back.

free beta hCG: 2.43
PAPP-A: 0.463
NT: 2.26mm

If the NIPT comes back high risk, then my next step is amnio test at 16 weeks 😕

I am a bit of a nervous wreck right now, and not sure how to get through the next few weeks. I am 36 and this is our first baby. Everything else on the ultrasound was normal.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I had a high risk NIPT test for DS at the end of last year which unfortunately turned out to be correct. I'm not going to lie, it was the worst time of my life and at times it felt unsurvivable. I did survive though and can tell you that whatever the outcome is, you will get through this. I found the support and kindness of the ladies at ARC to be invaluable. I pretty much just picked up the phone and sobbed to them on multiple occasions. That being said, this is the worst case scenario- based on your results, you have a 95% chance of the baby being healthy and if there were no markers on the scan (NT is normal) then this is the most likely outcome. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have, sending you the biggest hug and crossing my fingers you get good news.

Thank you so much for your reply, and for sharing. I am really sorry to hear of your experience, and I can totally understand what a harrowing time it was for you 😢 Can I ask you what your markers/results were prior to your NIPT? Don’t worry if you don’t remember. What happened after? Did you go on to have amnio? I’m still holding out hope that this is a risk rather than definitive but it’s hard not to worry xx

Yes, happy to answer. My numbers were normal other than PAPP-A which I think was about 0.2. No markers, normal NT. I was 42 though which automatically makes me a much higher risk. I had the amino, it was quick and painless and I was called with the results a few days later and I sadly had a termination a few days after that. I’m glad I had the Amnio for a conclusive result, CVS tests placental cells which can be different. You are absolutely right that this is a risk, and a small one. There are so many stories from women who were higher risk than you who eventually tested negative. The waiting is awful though, I am so sorry you’re going through this. Please don’t hesitate to DM me at any point if you need to. X
