Just returned from 20 week scan and sonographer said right kidney is measuring 6.7mm which is large. Any experience of this please and positive stories please?

Hi! I wanted to add my positive story. My son had a dilated kidney which was picked up just before he was born. I was worried at the time but was assured it’s quite common particularly in boys. He had an ultrasound at around 6 weeks old at which it had gone down but not enough to be signed off . Repeat scan at 4 months old and his kidney was normal size.

The only thing that was different was the paeds team wanted to have him on low dose oral antibiotics for the first month of his life. This was to prevent urine infection when he was tiny. i wasn’t thrilled about that but I took their medical advice obviously!

different doctors may recommend different things of course. I wish you all the best with your pregnancy and hope this puts your mind at ease a bit

Both my boys (now 21 and 23!) had this picked up before they were born. Trips to Great Ormond Street for scans (for their research purposes mostly we were told) and antibiotics for a year or 2 - can’t remember the details now. They are both fine, healthy young men. Never had kidney infections, problems of any kind. I wish you all the best !

@Whatsgoingonhere2 and @Tiggy321 thank you both very much for your replies they have helped a lot with the the worry.
I think the worst thing is they tell you the kidney is enlarged but not what it means or what is likely to happen so it’s good to hear positive stories.
also sound like my prediction was right and it’s going to be a blue one this this time!
