Hi All,

I went for my 12 week scan two days ago (I was 11+5 according to scan on the scan day ).

I had a really thorough sonographer and at first she was saying ‘yes all good’ once she was working her way through the checks. Once she got to the heart, she went very quiet and apologised for her quietness as she was just focussing. I immediately thought something was amiss. She continued on with the scan and then sent me out for a walk to try to get baby to move as her final two checks, she needed baby in another position.
after half hour, I got called back in, and she said she was inviting her colleague to join (more alarm bells ringing in my head). At this point, I got upset asking if my baby isn’t ok. They said baby looks great , however, there’s 2 items they are a little concerned about. One being they couldn’t see the ‘V sign’ between baby’s heart chambers. This could be just because of the position of baby, or could be some kind of defect.
the second issue was the back of baby’s neck. Not sure if the right word but basically there’s meant to be 3 equally spaced ‘chambers?’ At the back of the neck. There was 3 but the bottom one was smaller and looked ‘crushed’.

i will receive a referral to go to kings college london hospital next week for a specialist scan. I’ve been beside myself with worry and so upset that something could be wrong with my baby. I’m trying to keep positive but don’t want to be too positive.

has anyone had a similar experience and everything turned out to be fine?

Thanks.

Sorry this is happening, it’s very stressful. I had similar at my 20 week scan, baby wouldn’t get into the correct position to complete the heart checks and I was referred to fetal medicine to re-do and check a couple of things. In the end everything was fine, bit it could have gone either way. It’s good they have referred you so baby can get the proper checks and care if needed.
