NT 4.8mm at 12 weeks. CVS tomorrow - please help!

Reassurance desperately needed!

As the title says, our baby had an NT of 4.8mm at our 12 week scan. Together with my bloods, my risk came back as 1:19 of Downs Syndrome. My papp-a was 0.83 and my HCG was 1.34, so they have said they’re not concerned about my hormone levels, which is good.

I went to Oxford last Thursday for a CVS, but after the scan I had a big bleed. This is not uncommon for me as my placenta is very irritated apparently, and the bleeding stops quickly.

The good news is that they found during the scan that the NT had decreased in 3 days from 4.8 to 3.4, and they found no other structural anomalies.

They've rebooked me for tomorrow for my CVS, and I am terrified. I know it’s going to be transabdominal, and the thought of it just makes me feel sick! I’m not afraid of needles or blood tests, but u a terrified of it hurting!

Please could anyone share their experiences of a CVS, and also if you had a baby with a high NT that was fine in the end?!

I have no experience of either, but just wanted to send you a big virtual hug x

Hi OP

I had CVS, it really doesn't hurt much at all as the needle is so thin. Just grab someone's hand and squeeze til it's over. It's very very quick.

My test was because of high hormones rather than nuchal fold, but it's great yours is decreasing

Wishing you all the best for tomorrow @westievic ❤️❤️❤️

Our youngest had an NT of 4.7mm at 12 weeks - a CVS couldn’t be done because of the position of the placenta so I had an amnio instead. It didn’t hurt as much as I feared - I took a deep breath and let it out slowly, focusing on my breathing and looking up at the ceiling. It was over before I had let the breath out!

And our outcome was a positive one - he started reception this year :) The raised NT was considered just ‘one of those things’. Hope the same is true for you! Wishing you all the very best xxx

I had CVS and it really didn’t hurt. I think the dentist hurts more. Deffo take a hand to hold but it is just a scratch and little bit of pressure.

TheShellBeach · 23/10/2024 17:21

Good luck with it OP.
It doesn't take long.

@Soontobe60 Thank you ❤️

@Tiredofthewhirring Thank you so much, that’s really reassuring. Do you mind me asking you what your results were? X

@jmm499 Wow, that’s so nice to hear it worked out for you, I’m so pleased. Did they do a local anaesthetic before the CVS?

@CSSL7 😂 I hate dentist injections, so it’s good to hear it’s not worse than that!

@TheShellBeach Thank you - I’ve heard it maybe takes 10 minutes maximum?!

Our youngest had a NT of 6.3 and my combined chance of DS was 1 in 5. I opted for an amnio rather than CVS but don’t remember it hurting at all- a bit of pressure but it was a few minutes max. Was just focussed on staying still! All came back as unremarkable and he’s 16 months now and in to absolutely everything!

westievic · 23/10/2024 19:19

@Teamrofl Wow!! That’s amazing news, I’m so pleased it was all ok for you. Can I ask why you chose the amnio over the CVS? x

@westievic

Our results were all clear. Good luck tomorrow

TheShellBeach · 25/10/2024 11:07

How are you today @westievic?

westievic · 25/10/2024 18:15

@Tiredofthewhirring That’s great news! Hoping for the same us when our results come through earlier next week!

@TheShellBeach Thank you for checking in, I had the CVS yesterday and it actually didn’t hurt, it was just an uncomfortable feeling, but the doctor was so quick and was very happy with the sample taken. Unfortunately I did have a bleed yesterday evening so the hospital kept me in overnight, luckily everything was fine with the baby and we saw them bouncing around happily on a scan this morning! This will be my 5th bleed so far this pregnancy, so it’s not unusual for me. We’re just waiting now for the results which will hopefully come through next Tuesday or Wednesday - I am absolutely terrified!

Hi @westievic just wondered if you had an update for you got on?
currently awaiting amnio at 16w following NT of 4.6mm at 12w scan

westievic · 28/03/2025 14:10

@YellowDaisy7 Hi!
Yes! So I’m 36 weeks tomorrow and baby passed every test! CVS results came back absolutely normal, 20 weeks scan showed everything was ok, and the three subsequent heart scans (NHS protocol at our trust) showed no defects.
I’m booked in for a c section at the start of April (not due to any issues with this baby, but because of my two previous births) and feeling very grateful that everything has gone ok.
They said sometimes baby’s just have a larger nuchal fold measurement at that gestation and there’s sometimes never a reason for it!
Good luck with your results, I hope it all goes ok for you xx
