Nuchal thickness at 20 weeks high

We had our 20 week scan yesterday and there were a few concerning things. Nothing has been flagged up prior to this scan.

  1. Baby girl’s tummy is in the 90th percentile, sonographer said this is linked with gestational diabetes. I was already booked in for the glucose test so this wasn’t massively concerning.
  2. The second thing is what is keeping me up at night. They told me that the Nuchal thickness is 7mm which is 1mm above the ‘normal’ range.
I had to speak to another woman at another hospital on the phone where I took in very limited information as my brain was going into panic mode. I couldn’t even remember my phone number. Anyway, I am being referred to fetal medicine for further scans. They said it could be nothing, a chromosomal abnormality, or a structural problem. She said that a structural problem was unlikely as could clearly see baby’s heart and nothing was flagged up.

So that leaves me with nothing wrong, or a chromosomal problem. I had the NIPT at 12 weeks and all came back very low risk.
I’m really trying not to spiral, but not succeeding.

Can anyone share a similar experience?

Can anyone share a similar experience?

No but I just wanted to offer a virtual handhold.

We've had issues picked up at the 12 week scan twice and the wait can be a bit overwhelming can't it? Hope things go very smoothly for you Flowers

@CadyEastman thank you. Sending love and best wishes your way too.
It just came so out of the blue, this was our 4th scan as we did 2 private, and nothing has been raised until now. The waiting is going to drive me insane, but I can’t control it, so trying to not let it stress me out too much.

Hey. I’m currently 29+2 and had a NIPT at 20 weeks due to my age and BMI, come back low risk. Fast forward to the last 4 weeks and my amniotic fluid around the baby is rapidly increasing but I do have GD which they are putting it down to. My babies stomach is also quite big (only just within the margin it should be for now). Im now having scans every 2 weeks and also been referred to Fetal Medicine. They do scan the face of the baby to check for genetic issues like DS at these scans. The NT doesn’t always mean anything is wrong, so try to hold onto that. If you want to PM me with any questions I’ll try to help where I can. You’re not alone in this x

Sorry all, I’m the OP, I forgot I’d posted on here.

update in my case: I was induced at 39 weeks because they worried baby’s tummy would be too large … but she was absolutely perfect. 3 months old now and an absolute delight.

Hope this can ease worries. I know I was in a really dark place when I got the news, but I’m very grateful to say it turned out to be nothing.
Fingers crossed for you.
