28 weeks-Enlarged Cavum septum pellucidum

Hi there,

I am 28weeks and today have been for a growth scan and has the day from hell. When scanning the sonographer said part of baby’s brain was measuring bigger than it should do, we had to wait to see a foetal medicine specialist to do a scan.

He informed us that the Cavum Septum Pellucidum in the brain was measuring slightly enlarged at 10.4mm, he did tell me not to worry but when someone is telling you something is abnormal your mind goes to panic. He has said he will check it again in a months time and if it has gotten any bigger he will send me for an MRI.

I know Google is never your friend but I can’t see anyone else having had the same experience or anything about this part of the brain being enlarged.

Has anyone here been told that their baby had an enlarged Cavum septum Pellucidum? Was there any reasoning or was it indicative of any conditions?

It’s my first baby and nothing abnormal was picked up on my 20 week scan so I’m going out of my mind with worry. Sad

The same thing happened to me regarding cavum vergae. Measuring large at 28 weeks. What ended up happening with you?

I go for a scan on Monday when I will be 30 weeks to check to see if it has gotten any larger. If it has gotten any larger then I will likely be sent for an mri to confirm it as a cyst. However I don’t know what will happen if it has stayed the same size. It’s just a waiting game at the moment.

My 8 year-old has this, along with some other brain abnormalities. He also has a genetic condition. He has his struggles but he is a very happy and lovely little boy.

Hi
I’ve been told the same thing today at 23 weeks and am in a total daze. Was wondering what happened with you and what was the outcome. Did you find any other information ?

Would be really grateful for your reply 😊

Hi there,
mum currently sat with my 7.5 month old who is completely healthy and developmentally on track.
they had me so worried and did in fact send me for an MRI and we seen a professor who talked us through it and although slightly bigger my little girl is completely fine, no issues. Aesthetically you cannot tell either so it’s just her structure.
she did stop putting on weight at 38 weeks so I was induced but they can’t say what the reason was for that and didn’t relate to the enlargement of the csp.

I would honestly say (I know I worried like mad) try not to panic too much as it can just be a completely normal variant. If you have any other questions feel free to ask me. Sending you lots of love and hugs, it was a horrible feeling the day they told me.

Oh wow. Thanks so much for getting back to me so fast!
that’s definitely put my mind at rest there’s next to nothing on the internet about it. They are sending me for a mri too. Did they offer you a Amniocentesis test?
so pleased your little girl is healthy!

agreed, I really struggled to find any information on it when we had our scans, which made it seem even worse at the time, the professor we spoke to explained it really well. Sometimes people have slightly different things going on in their bodies that we can’t see but is completely normal (for example being double jointed) there is no issue there but it’s just a variant from the “normal” that is also completely “normal”

The MRI was enough that they was happy with baby so didn’t do any further testing. I wasn’t offered aminocentesis but think that’s because I found out slightly later so risk outweighed the benefits.
did they say exactly what the CSP was measuring? Ours sat around the 10.4/10.5mm mark which was only slightly enlarged.

sorry it’s taken a bit to get back to you, having a 7.5month old does not make for a quick reply 😂

😂 no problem at all I also have a 2y.o so know exactly how it is.

im waiting for a MRI appointment to come through so hopefully when I get the results from that it will put my mind at rest even more and turn out to be a normal variant too.

so they think it’s currently between 6-8cm at the moment. They’ve offered me the aminocentesis but I’ve said I’ll wait until I get the mri result.

Hi

yes finally got my mri results back last week. They said they can’t see any other abnormalities and that it’s a normal variant! The relief was unbelievable! Thanks for getting back to me it really helped a lot chatting to someone who had gone through the same 😊
