CVS test clear, but very high NT

When we had our 12 week scan, baby had an NT of 9.9 and we were told they had cystic hygroma.

Since then I've had a CVS, and NT was up to 11.07 at than scan. Rexults came back clear, both the initial set and the more advanced testing. At our consultant appointments 1 week after CVS NT was 8.8.

Has anyone been in a similar situation, and what was the outcome for baby? I have 2 and half weeks until our fetal echo

I’ve been in your situation: high NT at the 12 week scan and then fetal medicine found a cystic hygroma. Our amnio came back clear which I was amazed about, and anomaly scan and heart scan were fine as well. We still had a slightly high nuchal fold at 20 weeks but they were happy that it was going down and that the cystic hygroma itself had resolved by then. Sounds like a good sign that yours is going down too.

My little boy is seven months old now and doing really well, so even though there’s a lot of doom and gloom around cystic hygromas there is hope!

Two pieces of advice: stay away from google and ask your consultant lots of questions. I found that other doctors didn’t know a lot about cystic hygromas and gave me conflicting information which was really confusing!

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for good results for you going forward! Look after yourself Smile

I had this too. Nt of 11 at 12 week scan but cvs came back clear.

It is a very good sign that your baby's nt is reducing. I was told that if nt reduced then that increased the chance of a healthy baby so there is still a chance that everything could be ok for you.

Unfortunately in my case the nt did not reduce and fluid started to collect around my baby's heart and lungs and his heart stopped beating completely at 17 weeks. We had genetic testing and found out he had a syndrome which, had he survived, would have made him very poorly so we were happy that he didn't have to suffer. It was a one off and probably won't happen again in future pregnancies, just one of those things.

They can do further genetic testing to help find out why the nt is so high. I think I was offered it at around 16 weeks.

Please feel free to pm me if you ever want to chat to someone who has been there!

Thank you both for the replies. Its good to hear both sides of the coin. It lets me know there may be hope, but to be realistic at the same time.

We are just taking it one appointment at a time, and hoping for the best. My virology results came through clear today, and we have our echo appointment on the 2nd

Hi Emma,

Just wondering how you and baby are getting on? I'm in a similar situation now. I'm 16 wks pregnant with twins, its my first pregnancy. I was told at my 12 week scan that something doesn't look right with twin 2 and there was extra fluid at neck. Consultant said it might be patau, edwards or downsyndrome. They recommend a CVS test and so I went for that. Literally just got final results on Monday this week and all results are clear which we were obviously delighted about.

They brought me in for a scan today, I'm now 16.5 weeks pregnant and unfortunately we were told the fluid has increased- its around the neck and lungs. They don't know why or what is going on. Consultant said it could be many different things. He said twin 2 is really struggling, there may not be a heartbeat next time I go in for my scan. I'm just really overwhelmed and confused by all of this.Twin 1 is doing great and I'm really thankful for this. There is just so much uncertainty with twin 2. I asked was there a chance fluid will reduce and he said unlikely. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi, I'm going through something similar now and have a tfmr scheduled. In the past week I've had 3 scans, and the fluid has gone from 6.5 to 9mm, and they found fluid in the lungs. This is my first pregnancy and im scared im making the wrong choice by giving up hope
