Low Papp a and baby is measuring small

So I had a high risk of Down syndrome after the combined test which resulted in me deciding to have a CVS. During the CVS the consultant said my baby was quite small for gestational age and the placenta was also small and narrow. Due to the placenta being small the sample was not enough for the quick result so I’m the meantime I had the NIPT test which has since come back as low risk.

Regarding my low Papp a I’m so worried, they’ve sent me for a 16 week viability scan and I’m just wondering if anyone has been in this position so early on before? Every thread I’ve read have been of people being diagnosed at the 20 week scan with having a small baby so for it to be present so early is making me worry.

It sounds weird but all these tests and issues have made me detach myself from the pregnancy in case something goes wrong. Any advice or similar experiences would be very much welcomed.

Hi, I didn't want to leave this unanswered.

I also feel very detached from my pregnancy as we got high risk for Downs syndrome and now waiting for the NIPT test (which I wish I'd just had done in the first place). Me and my husband have stopped talking about the baby at all.

Have you spoken to your doctor about all this? Mine was very reassuring and kind and explained chances etc to me.

If you want to talk, you can also pm me, because going through this is hell.

Thanks for replying. I have a scan tomorrow and then a consultant appointment straight after so I’ll get a chance to speak to someone then. Since the NIPT results I haven’t spoken to anyone from the hospital.

Even with the result from the NIPT I feel like I can’t relax yet because I don’t know how the scan is going to go and I haven’t brought a thing. In my first pregnancy I went shopping straight after my 12 week scan, I’m 16 weeks now and can’t even bare to think about shopping or anything. It feels so weird.

The wait for the NIPT result was probably the lowest point I’ve been in this pregnancy because it was the not knowing when it would come, I got it a week after the test but even that never made a difference to my feelings.

I hope your appointment goes well and that you can get some reassurance. At least knowing what is happening can be helpful, the not knowing is the worst part for me.

I looked on the Antenatal Results and Choices website and that helped a lot. They have a helpline too. I think unless you've been through this, it's so hard to understand, so there aren't many people to talk to.

Hi, wow it really was so long ago. Thankfully everything went well. My daughter has now just turned 5. The whole pregnancy was very stressful though as she was measuring under the lowest centile the whole way through which meant I was in for extra scans and meetings with the consultant. I did also find out I had pre eclampsia and ended up being induced at 37 weeks pregnant. Which unfortunately is a common complication with the low papp a. But 5 years on this all feels like a dream!
