Having CVS test and worried about it..

Not posted before but we got a high chance screening result and am booked to have a CVS next week. I am really worried about it and even though the chances of miscarriage are low, I have a complicated pregnancy anyway so stressing out about it. Anyone been through this that can help?

I had a cvs with my daughter, 3rd pregnancy. First two were a breeze so I was terrified. It didn’t hurt half as much as I expected. They gave me a local anaesthetic in the area, then it felt like cramping as it went further in. Everything turned out fine for us, although my pregnancy was a nightmare and the wait for the results was horrific. The doctor told me the chance of miscarriage were very little. Good luck hope this has helped some.

Thank you. This is my second pregnancy but just dreading the whole thing and worried about miscarrying even though the chance is small. I'm no good with pain either so terrified.. How long did you wait for results?

I am ridiculous with pain honestly, but the thought is definitely worse than the actual procedure. Just don’t look, my husband watched and think he was worse than me. It weren’t long for the results, only a few days, but felt like a life time

I've had one too. It was very straightforward and I didn't find it painful at all and I got the results after 2 working days. The risk of miscarriage is low especially if you have it done by someone experienced. They told me that if the procedure goes well the risk drops straight away. Good luck!

Thanks! From reading other forums, it is good to see the heartbeat after the test as this reduces the risk also. Anyone else been told that? My test is Tuesday morning and been told they are very experienced so keeping everything crossed

I had a CVS with DD and it was nowhere near as painful as I expected. They numbed the area well so it was just a scratch as the needle went in and a slightly uncomfortable feeling but it was over really quickly. They had the ultrasound on the whole time checking where the needle was and then straight after turned the sound back up to pick up the heartbeat which felt really reassuring. I had a few cramps afterwards and took it easy for a day or two and got the initial results within about 3 days and the full set a week later.

Yes they said the same thing to me about seeing the heartbeat and it all being straightforward meaning that the risk drops straightaway. I was told not to work for a couple of days, but I do a physical job with long shifts and they did say it was being very cautious. I did go straight home and have to heave 2 older DCs around, though, which was probably more strenuous than work! I think the anticipation is worse, mine was decided straight after the 12 week scan so I only had about 30 mins to worry about it. You may also want to ask if anyone would be able to scan or listen to your baby a week or so later if all is ok with the CVS results so you can see that everything's still fine.

I had a CVS in my second pregnancy. We knew our baby was very poorly do the miscarriage risk wasn't really a worry for us. I found I was so focused on getting a definitive result that I really wasn't bothered by the procedure at all and I regularly faint at needles! And then you'll soon know what you are dealing with and can plan accordingly.

Thanks everyone, think I am more bothered by the waiting than anything else, just want to get it over with... Has anyone had a miscarriage because of the test?

don't be scared. it is not painful, just stressful. I had it and after 2 days I had the worst result: Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18), which I was kind of expecting... (1:5 from the blood test). very, very depressing... we decided to terminate after all at 14 weeks. it was the worst exeprience in my lifetime - very painful (especially mentally). but in fact better option than keep the baby to suffer when born ...
