Possible ventriculomegaly and small head mesurement...

Hi everyone
I am 21 weeks pregnant after a tfmr last year associated with brain abnormalities.

At my 20 week scan last week the sonographer measured baby as small generally, but baby's head is measuring particularly small (3rd centile). She also measured the baby's ventricles at 13mm - 3mm above the upper limit for normal.
As this was how everything started last time I got quite hysterical. the sonographer arranged for me to go and see my consultant straight away.
When my consultant scanned me (and I was in there for about an hour) she couldn't seen any evidence of enlarged ventricles and couldn't get a measurement of over 8.5mm... She did seemed a little concerned about baby's head measurement though.
Due to my history I have been sent for an MRI scan on Monday to check the ventricles and to check for other brain abnormalities.
I am so so scared as I don't think I could handle another tfmr if it comes back the baby has brain damage again.
What would you ladies think? I am trying so hard to be optimistic. Xx

I'm so sorry you're in this position.

I have had a tfmr but it was for edwards.

I have no experience to help but I can imagine after one tfmr this must just be awful.

The bright side is that if the consultant couldn't find the extreme measurements then it's probably ok.

What are the other measurements like? Is baby measuring small generally?

Hi kitty thank you for replying.

Yes all other measurements are below average... All except the femur length which is spot on.

I keep going back and forward between being optimistic that this is just precautionary due to my history and this is almost definitely the end of another pregnancy. My heads all over the place.

If all other measurements are little then maybe it's a little baby. I think they worry if baby is 5th centile or lower.

In my scans my dd2s abdomen was smaller that her head, I was told that when something is 'wrong' with the baby's development or they are distressed over a long period the abdomen slows growing to concentrate on head and brain development.

Therefore measurements roughly on the same scale, even if small, are not necessarily a worry, it's 'mismatched' measurements that can be a soft marker.

That was a fetal medicine specialist that told us, before we were looking at trisomies being an issue so I'm guessing it applies to all babies.

Baby's head is 3rd centile but all the other measurements are small, but not as small as that... They haven't displayed real concern but I'm just so worried that the MRI will pick something else up.... Hopefully baby is just small! X

I had tfmr last year for spina bifida and would also be anxious too. It's only natural after the heartbreak. I was throughout my subsequent pregnancy.
I hope that the wait for results isn't long and that you get a positive outcome.
I pray it's just a small baby. It's important that they are thorough.
Thinking of you xxx
