High risk of Edwards/Patau syndrome

I had a phone call today from the specialist MW at hospital today, as my bloods have come back with a 1:19 risk of Edwards or Patau syndrome. I went straight in for the Harmony test, which will give results within 14 days. I was offered CVS but the midwife seemed to be dissuading me from having it, her main reason being that there were no obvious abnormalities on my scan on Weds. I'm approaching 14 weeks now, have told most family and friends, colleagues etc.

What I'm most hoping for is, apart from a hand hold, people to tell me their experiences of having this horribly high result but all being well...conversely, I'd like to know if anyone has had a seemingly clear scan but a positive Edwards diagnosis after bloods.

I really felt like the midwife was gently suggesting it was unlikely baby had it...but maybe that's just what I wanted to hear?

Thanks for listening, I'm pretty shaken and upset, would appreciate any experiences, good or bad, people wouldn't mind sharing.

I went into hospital on the Monday morning and had my results on the Wednesday morning by 9am xx

Hi, what was your results if you don't mind me asking? xx

@FFE14 my screening was 1 in 3 and then unfortunately the NIPT was positive for Edwards. The amnio is my last bit of hope - had that at 16 + 4 and the thorough scan didn't show any abnormalities. I know that a lot of the time scans show at a later stage but I'm praying this was a good sign.

It's such a stressful time isn't it. Thinking of you, hope you have some good news from the amniocentesis.
My screening was 1 in 5 so I'm half expecting the Nipt results to be the same as yours. So high risk. My scan was ok too but they did notice a bit of fluid around babys heart which is a worry but they also said that could mean anything. What was your NT measurement like? xx

Crawford01 · 10/10/2019 16:40

My risk was 1 in 27 and I was 1 of the lucky ones and it came back OK, I'm think h of you ladies going through this, it's an awful time xxx

@FFE14 it's very stressful, as NIPT is such high probability I know amnio will return the same. It's a very said time. Thinking of you too, I wouldn't worry at the screening test too much, from all the bloody hours I've put in to reading stories online, a lot of the time the screening test doesn't turn out to be true. My NT was 2.4mm which is within the normal range. I think NT is only a concern for T21 (I may be wrong here!). I really hope your results come back good xx

Thank you and so pleased you are one of the lucky ones. Gives me a little hope xxx

Hi all,

I had high risk bloods back 1/50 for Edwards and Patau syndrome. The results came back on Friday. I has NIPT test on Sunday. Should hopefully get the results back tomorrow ( or the latest will be Monday ). The wait is killing me :(
There was no abnormalities detected at either my 12 weeks scan...or the scan on the day of the NIPT test. I'm just praying for some good news :'( xx

FFE14 · 30/10/2019 17:08

Hi, my screening result was 1 in 5 for edwards and patau syndrome, the Nipt test came back with lower chance but unfortunately I lost the baby at 15 weeks :( good luck with your results, it is a stressful time but the fact they didn't see anything on the scan is a good thing xx

ZD84 · 30/10/2019 18:55

Oh no :( i m so sorry to hear that you lost your baby. It's such a worrying time. The odds are in our favour, so we are trying to stay positive. I m hoping the results come in tomorrow so we know what the future entails. Sending huge hugs xx
