1:1700 result of downs screening

My first was 1 in 8,000 and this one is 1 in 1700 what does it mean? I can't find any clear iformation online about it.

It means you have a tiny risk of your baby having Downs Syndrome - about 0.6%. It's determined by your unchallenged translucency measurement, combined blood test and age.

My first pregnany was 1 in 8000 and second 1 in 150. Both were fine. I think its just statistics. You have a slightly higher chance this time but still a very low chance. My second pregnancy had a much thicker nuchal translucency. I dont why though.

It's very low anyway. It's probable the increased risk (although still tiny) is due to your increased age this time around. I didn't get any info for my dc2 so can't compare dc1 and dc2.

I am 23 an the fluid on the neck measured 1.4mm and from what I've read my age and this measurement should make me low risk so why is it so high?

I know it's not high, I just wonder wether it's worth worrying about?

Probably your blood hormone levels (if you had blood tests too) It's a very small risk though.

It means if you had 1700 babies, 1699 of them would be healthy and one would have Down's. Wink

1 in whatever only every gives your a risk - you can have a high risk of something and it does not happen, or a low risk and it does happen.

I'd not worry about 1 in 1700.

I did worry about mine at 1:16 for Down's and 1:4 for Patau's and had 4 healthy children.

It's based on an algorithm by the way, age, nuchal measurement and blood hormone levels all go in to the calculation. There's no need to worry that it means anything unusual.

As others have said, the increase is probably due to your age. My DC's rates varied from 1 in 50,000 to 1 in 250. I had an amnio for the latter, but I wouldn't for 1 in 1700.

My DS1 was 1:6500

I've just had my quad results back for DC2 and I got a 1:25 chance of downs.

I chose to have an amnio and it's come back clear. If I'd had a 1:1700 I would not have worried at all and certainly not had the amnio.
