Femur and humerus slowed right down at 34 weeks...petrified!

Hi everyone,

I've posted here'd before and this thread was so supportive. We've had a bit of roller coaster pg. Anomaly scan threw up cleft lip and also femurs below the 5th percentile. Amnio was performed and was clear and so growth scans were booked for 28 and 34 weeks. 28 week one showed same growth pattern as usual: femur below 5th (2weeks behind) head and abdomen measured bang on 28 weeks.
Had 34 week growth scan on Friday and head and abdomen measured bang on again but this time femur (and humerus) are FOUR weeks behind in stead of the usual 2. She still plots on the growth chart and estimate her being nearly 5lbs which is good.
I know it's not Downs because of amnio result but the consultant said dwarfism etc can't be ruled out (i brought it up, the doctors have never mentioned it) but it looks unlikely?! no more scans etc for me and wait to give birth.
I feel complete overwhelmed. Do i book a private scan later on? We are only just sorting out needs of a baby with cleft lip and I'm scared of more problems. Has anyone else had tiny femur measurements etc in their pg?

Thanks for any advice!

The limb measurements are really only minimally off. 4 weeks behind is nothing. And the head and chest are the right size which is a positive indicator. I would try not to worry too much. Ultrasounds at your stage of pregnancy are reknowned for not being accurate. And also, using ultrasound for skeletal measurements isn't ideal but its all that can be used during pregnancy!

Ultrasound at 38 weeks didn't predict a 12lb baby. (Not mine)
They really can't be that accurate. Try not to worry Smile

I can't remember the exact details but I had 5 or 6 scans (for various reasons) and in each one at least one or two measurements were showing as well behind compared to others. Baby came out fine! As a PP has said, ultrasounds are by no means accurate and much depends on the angle the baby is lying in at the time.

I would have thought had it been something to be concerned about, the doctors would have spoken with you.

I remember panicking about my DD1's femur length... It was always short and she got more behind at every scan...

But she was absolutely fine. They really can be off Thanks

Thanks all, these are really reassuring answers. The doctors have never brought it up as an option, so I guess I have to trust them. I'm sure they know more than Dr Google!
It seems we've had to spend every stage of this pregnancy worrying and waiting for results and now I just want to meet her (though obv not until 37 weeks at least!) Then we have to get through her operations from 3 months old. If all goes well, I am booking a major holiday next year for us all!
