Dating scan but no baby

Hi I'm posting for a friend as she's upset.
She went for her dating scan and they've told her they couldn't see a baby. She has to wait another week for abother scan. What could the reason be? Could this be a happy ending?

What gestation is she?

It could be that she is too early for the scan to pick anything up. Another week and there will either be something conclusive there, or not indication an early loss or chemical pregnancy.

12 weeks

At 12 weeks I'm afraid that doesn't sound good

I had this happen in my first pregnancy - the medical term is an anembryonic pregnancy (which is a yuck term), but what happens is that the baby dies very early on, but the rest of the tissues keep going and producing HCG, so you feel pg and don't bleed.

I'm really sorry your friend is going through this, finding out at your 12 week scan is particularly awful

Thank you for replies. I suppose it doesn't sound hopeful. As surely at 12 weeks you could see baby. The sonographer said she was measuring 12+2 I'm assuming that was the sack?
