NT measurement 3.8 mm. Confused.

Had my dating scan today. The Nuchal measurement was 3.8 m. I'm really confused everything I google says this is really high but the consultant at the hospital said it's only slightly bigger than normal. Also everything I read people seem to have been giving a 1 in something chance of downs. I haven't yet.

They've done some blood tests today and have referred us to a bugger hospital for another scan and more tests.

I feel so confused and a bit numb. I'm not sure what I'm posting for just want to get it out.

You won't get a 1 in X number until the blood test results come back.

3.5mm is on the upper side of the scale, but how many weeks/days are you?

Try not to panic, even if you get a 1 in 4 number then that's still a 75% chance your baby is fine.

I know how frightening anything unusual can be but the odds are on your side. Hold tight until your bloods come back. Thanks

I'm 13 + 1 today. It's the not knowing that's making me feel so awful. And I'm a bit of a worrier anyway. I feel exhausted already just from thinking about it Sad

It's only human to worry so don't beat yourself up. Do you know when your follow up scan will be?!

13+1 isn't too late for the scan but it's close to the limit (13+6) so you'd expect the fold to be bigger anyway.

Just do what you can to relax until you get better info.

Trying to distract myself with crap tv for now.

DP keeps saying no point in worrying yet but I can't control what my brain thinks about.

My nt came back 3.9mm and am 40 next month. i was was given a 1:5 risk of downs. Had a cvs and the first part cAme back normAl but am waiting for the full results which is nerve wrecking. It's hard not to worry but I've read a lot of threads where there is a chance everything will be ok. Just hang in there

Hotdog78 · 14/06/2014 12:18

Jellybean, I'm just wondering if the 2nd part of your CVS test was ok? I'm going through a similar thing at the moment. I'm 35, my NT was 4.8mm and I was given a 1 in 6 chance of Downs. First part has come back normal but we are so worried at the moment and finding it hard to relax and enjoy being pregnant. Good luck.

Jellybean14 · 21/07/2014 21:03

Hi Hotdog78
Just seen your message. Sorry for not getting back to you earlier. Yes the 2nd part came back ok and I am now 24 weeks pregnant! Ive done additional fetal echo tests and it all looks good so far so I have decided to stop worrying so much as there is nothing I can do and worrying isnt going to make a difference! Its just going to deprive me from actually enjoying my pregnancy! The dr did tell me that my risk level has come back down to the level it would be for any other woman! Hopefully everything is ok for you!

Hotdog78 · 03/08/2014 19:39

Hi Jellybean, that's great news. The 2nd part of my test was ok, too, as was my heart scan. It's so nice to hear good news! All the best with your pregnancy.

So I had a scan today. The fluid behind baby's neck is measuring 3.8mm. I'm 11 weeks and 1 day pregnant. Can this fluid correct itself? I'm still awaiting my nhs scan and screening but it's not for another 3 weeks. Can anyone help? I'm so nervous I had 2 miscarriages in 6 month last year, I was hoping for a smooth pregnancy

Hopehope20 · 27/08/2018 07:26

The fluid can definitely change but I would absolutely try and get the NHS screening forward. 3 weeks is a long time for this to be playing in your mind. If you are in a position to pay for harmony test then that will move things along much quicker to give you peace of mind. There are also lots of people who have had high fluid reading (higher than yours) and it has not come down but everything has been absolutely fine with their babies. Try and keep positive

Doofy · 27/08/2018 10:14

It was a private company I paid for yesterday, the only one in my local area. Thank you for your response xx

ShinyBadger · 27/08/2018 23:01

Doofy - you can only look at the NT if the baby measures over 45 mm CRL. if you are 11 weeks 1 day your baby isn't big enough and they should not of measured the NT - also were they a qualified Sonographer - many private places have in house trained people with no formal qualifications.

I would call your hospital and say you have had an early scan and you are 11+1 and need to bring your scan forward as you will be over 14 weeks and miss the 1st trimester screening.

Hope it all turns out ok for you, x

Doofy · 28/08/2018 12:02

Thank you so much for this you have made me less worried 😍

Doofy · 28/08/2018 19:04

@shinybadger what is the CRL? Sorry if that's a thick question. I've seen a CRL on the scan photo and says 4.29cm which is smaller than 45mm x

ShinyBadger · 28/08/2018 20:07

The CRL is the crown rump length, so babies measurement from head to bum. That’s how the pregnancy is dated x

Doofy · 28/08/2018 21:06

@shinybadger thank you for your help much appreciated xx

ShinyBadger · 04/09/2018 19:22

Hi doofy, I have been thinking about you? How was your scan? I hope your ok? X

Doofy · 05/09/2018 10:00

Hi Shinybadger thank you for the lovely message. it's not until tomorrow and I am so scared xx

ShinyBadger · 05/09/2018 22:48

I will think of you tomorrow then. I hope all goes well x

Doofy · 06/09/2018 13:03

Hi shinybadger, the fluid has corrected itself was 2.7mm. The relief is unreal. Had the blood tests but I'm so positive now xx

ShinyBadger · 06/09/2018 21:58

Thanks for letting me know, I did think about you! That’s great news :)

Doofy · 07/09/2018 10:42

❤ thank you x

Hello, I know this post is old but just wanted to say it gave me that bit of hope to hold onto when we got the news of a 3.8m NT measurement at the 12 week scan and were referred to the FMU - so thank you, and am hoping a new post makes it easy for someone else to find :)
my combined screening blood test came back low risk for DS, ES and PS but we chose to go ahead with the CVS for peace of mind and to see what could cause the increased NT measurement - both results came back pretty quick and all clear. We also had a fetal heart scan at 14 weeks which was clear too, but they have given me another fetal heart scan at the 20 week scan just to be sure.
The medical teams are fab but I do think they take every precaution (and rightly so) but it does have a big impact on your mental health!
Currently enjoying the news we have a healthy baby and that it was just a normal variation result. hope this also gives someone else a bit of reassurance when they go into the google spiral.
