Annencephaly AGAIN!!! But this time the termination is different........

So I;ve been for my 12 week scan today (12+5) and my worst fears were realised AGAIN.

My first PG was terminated due to Annencephaly then I went on to have a very healthy DS and now this PG is due to be terminated next week......

The difference is that last time I had a Surgical Termination and was out cold for the whole thing, this time they say I am too far gone and my only option for termination would be a Medical Termination.....I am petrified of this.

As much as it is an awful thing to go through either way, can anyone please give me some straightforward no holds barred information about what I/we are about to experience........

Very sorry to hear your news. It is technically possible to still perform a surgical termination up to around 14/15 weeks - is it worth going back to your consultant and asking them to reconsider?

There are reasons why medical termination is preferred after about 12 weeks but that is not to say surgical termination is not possible.

If you go for the medical route, you are likely to be given tablets that help to 'switch off' your pregnancy hormones. 24-48 hours later you will then be given another drug to induce contractions and you will deliver your baby.

Sorry again that you are having to go through this. It must be very upsetting for you.

Oh and I did push for a Surgical procedure but the consultant left the room to check to see what the hospitals position on that was and he came back to say unfortunately they are very strict and as its a Friday and they do not perform these procedures at a weekend I am on or will be just over their cut off in terms of how many weeks PG I am/will be......................feeling out of my depth at the moment

I don't know if this is an option for you, but when I was waiting for CVS results I researched my options for if the outcome wasn't good and I read that although the NHS won't do a surgical termination after a certain point, there is more leniency if you pay privately...? Would it be worth looking into that?

hi i have replied on the other thread. my experience was like goodygumdrops. tablets to switch off hormones and then pessaries to induce.

first termiantion took 10 hours from pessaries to birth but that was at 26 weeks. I had morphine which was a great drug. the second was at 14 weeks and I only had to dilate to 2cm. It took 2 hours and I took paracetamol.

mail me if you have any more questions. I begged for surgical but have no doubts that medical was a better route in retrospect.

Hi StormBird - I am so sorry you are in this position. I think what the hospital is telling you is outrageous. I know it must seem impossible, but if you can, please ask to go to a larger hospital where they are able to carry out an operation (if of course that is definitely what you want) before 14wks. If you miscarried you should be able to get an op rather than do L&D so I am really angry for you. As one of the other posters said, if the NHS still insists on being unhelpful, then there are private providers who should be able to help. I have been in this position twice already but I had to do L&D as I was too far gone. If you haven't already, please do get in contact with Antenatal Results and Choices as they will be able to offer you lots of support - they speak to many ladies in your position every day of the week.
