Higher NT measurement now worried

I had my NT scan yesterday and I was measured at 13 weeks exactly. The fold was measured at 2.7mm and I'm pretty worried about it. I know that this is at the high end of normal and I've had my blood taken as well but I will have to wait for the results.

The main reason that I'm so worried is that I lost my little boy to an undiagnosed heart condition at age 5. I'm so worried that this baby will have a serious heart defect. I don't think they will be able to rule that out until after the baby is delivered. I am still right at the start of my grief for my amazing son and I know I won't survived losing another child.

Does anyone have any experience of height NT results?

Hi.

So so sorry to hear bout your little boy. There are no words I can give you.

My measurement was 2.9mm at 12+4 and the midwives at mine didn't bat an eyelid at that. Combined with bloods my risk came back at 1:153.

I'm afraid I can be of no help as I didn't go for an amnio so i don't know where I stand really (20 week scan is Tues and i'm nervous and will be a relief if all ok). I read a lot of threads on this board about the higher NT measurements adn it made me feel a lot better as they tend to have happy outcomes (hopefully we both will be adding to that).

But my understanding from reading (everything I can come across about NT measurements) is that 2.7mm at 13 weeks isn't particularly high and well within normal limits. I totally understand why you are worried but try not to. Phone for your blood results on Mon (mine were through within 2 days).

Take care and good luck xxx

Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure that I'll have an amnio either but I'm just worried about heart problems.

Your odds look a lot better than I expect due to my age (35). I hope it all goes well at the 20 week, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Orion3 imm so sorry to hear about your son no wonder you are worried. I have heard of many people who have had high nt measurements and everything turned out ok, if you're in the normal range I'm sure it will be fine. I don't know if an amnio will help diagnose a heart condition, and the 20wk scan doesn't pick them all up either. But with your history I'm sure you should be given a full cardiac scan at 24+ weeks which when done by a cardiologist will pick up nearly every problem if there are any. If the NHS won't give you one you can have these done privately for around £150.xxx

oh you poor thing. How utterly awful for you.

I have a 1 year old with DS who had open heart surgery at 7 months old. They picked up his heart defect at 20 weeks and scanned him regularly after that. Feel free to ask me anything you like.

I am certain that you are eligible for cardiac scans from 20 weeks (the earliest they can really pick anything up). You can phone up the ultrasound department of your local hospital and tell them that you would like this and explain why and they will put you through to the right person to discuss it.

Orion3 you poor thing - I really feel for you.

I don't have any experience or much knowledge re the NT measurements but my baby had a severe heart defect that was picked up at 20 weeks. I think that they check the heart very carefully at this scan and if anything at all is amiss it should hopefully be picked up. I'm not sure if they can see any defects earlier than this but if you are concerned I would def ask whether it would be worth having a scan specifically for this before 20 weeks.

Lots of Love

I'm so sorry that I didn't reply earlier. This thread disappeared from my timeline.
I was given a low risk 1:723 from the bloods and NT but I'm still terrified about the heart. I have an anomoly scan at 20 weeks then a heart scan at 22 weeks. I'm only 16 weeks now so I've a long time to wait. This pg seems so fragile.

I had a heart scan at 16 weeks. It was at the Fetal medical centre so I had to pay for it, but it was worth it. I'd been given high risk at 12 weeks due to bloods/nuchal/soft marker on the heart - had CVS which came back clear. But still needed the heart question answered.
FMC do them from 16 weeks and they ruled out any major structural abnormalities. Had another on the nhs at 21 weeks - also showed fine. I've been 'discharged' from fetal cardiac care and am now 29 weeks pregnant. Do ask if you want any more details.

Thanks blue I have a scan booked for 22 weeks but I'm finding it hard to bond with this wee one right now. I hope if I get the all clear on the heart I might be able to, I might be in touch to see how you arranged the scan in fmc.
