Private consultant led care

I have opted to go private and just had a random thought pop into my head - my consultant says I can contact him any time 24 hrs a day on his mobile. What if when I need him (e.g. I am in labour) he has been drinking? Or do these private consultants only drink when on annual leave?? Thanks!

I've had all mine privately and this is not something that has ever come up. In my experience they act with utmost professionalism. I am sure any obstetrician would hand over to whoever covers for him/ her if he felt he was in any way compromised. that includes illness, drink, injury... any thing that would impact on anyone's ability to do their job. Remember... There is always a partner or someone to step in.
Happy to recommend my London obstetrician. Could not be more professional. And has always been there when needed!

Funnily enough, I asked my lovely obs (Paul Armstrong at the Portland- had both DS and DD with him) exactly that question and apparently they just don't drink unless away on hols! Incredible. And apparently they get used to cat napping as and when so that they are alert even in the middle of the night! Clearly I wouldn't be cut out for that job!!

Thanks so much and well done you for having the balls to ask your consultant (I would not be cut out for that life either!)
