2 soft markers at anomaly scan - scared and would like reassurance please!!

Has anyone had any experience of this and is able to help me try and calm down as I am freaking out big time!

I had my 20w NHS scan last week and there were no structural abnormalities but the sonographer found 2 choroid plexus cysts. She didn't seem too concerned and said that they normally resolve but as a precaution (I am 42 and have had a previous downs pregnancy) she would refer me for another scan with the consultant in a couple of weeks.

I decided in the meantime to go to the FMC for another scan to get some reassurance and this has just made things worse. They found another soft marker for chromosomal issues (a sandal toe separation of big and second toe). The Dr didn't propose an amnio at this stage because of the risks to the baby but suggested i come back at 32wks and have one then.

I'm so confused. If I find out at 32wks that there is a problem what are we supposed to do with that information at that stage? And how am I supposed to wait another 11wks as I get bigger and more attached to my baby girl (as do my two children who are sooo excited). But should I have an amnio when the risks of miscarriage are 1/100 when my 12wk scan gave me a risk of 1/636 (and my NHS results were even better) which hasn't been changed by the presence of the soft markers???

Sorry for rambling post but any experiences that you have had would be gratefully received as I'm just so scared, confused and terrified of what might happen next.

Thank you.

I am always pessimistic in life..exam results etc..but I think when it comes to this..it is your child and I feel maybe I cannot afford to pessimistic at this stage and give my child all the hope in the world! obviously this is my personal opinion and I understand we all cope in different ways! I hope everything goes well today xx

Hi there. Leo - saw your post on the other thread. So pleased that you got the reassurance that you need and can now go ahead and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

Just a quick update from me...I went to my follow up scan with the consultant yesterday and she basically confirmed what the FMC saw (though sandal gap on both feet this time). She said it was a slightly odd combination as the cysts are normally markers for Edwards and the sandal gap for downs which meant she couldn't give me an accurate estimate of increased risk but she did say there was an increased risk although both markers (variants?) are only very weakly associated. We left the scan feeling a bit better but within about 5 mins I was completely stressed and obsessing that although my odds were good, the markers were an absolute sign that I was that 1 in 600!

Realised then that I wouldn't be able to wait out the next 10 weeks without driving myself completely insane (as well as DH) so went back in and got the amnio done straightaway. I did immediately feel terrible and thought about the risk I had taken with reasonably good odds but by this morning I realised that it was totally the right decision for me as given my age and history (as well as personality type) I can't escape the feeling that this isn't going to have a happy ending (sorry if that sounds hideously gloomy). Now am just keeping everything crossed that I'm completely wrong!

xx

Thanks hun..there is still a chance for me but it is still an extremely low risk..so im just gna keep my fingers crossed that I am not that one..

Minstrel I hope your amnio results come back with what you want...I would say 1 in 600 is reasonably good odds...and also because your markers don't both indicate the same thing..then it is likely they are both isolated things...

Good Luck xx
