Bad news from DS sreening

I posted in pregnancy to start with but have popped over here to hopefully get some support.

Had scan and bloods done last Tuesday, and Thurs got a call to say we were high risk. 1:23 chance due to 3.4 NT and blood counts that are high on one and low on the other. Decided on amnio but as I'm only 13+3 have to wait til May 5th, nearly 2 weeks.

I can't stop crying, it's really a shock, plus we'd told ds about the baby after the scan, and now wish we hadn't in case, well in case whatever.

It feels like a long wait, but I am trying to keep myself distracted.

Just to let you know, I phoned hosp this morning to try and bring my amnio forward but it was already at the earliest point they could do it. She offered my a slot for CVS this afternoon at 2pm, so after a bit of deliberation we've decided to go for it. The risks aren't that much different and I'll get the early results by the weekend. I know this is a complete U-turn on the reasons for my decision before, but I can't bear waiting at least another two weeks for results from an amnio.

I wasn't worried about the procedure before, but now that it's in less than four hours I am really nervous.

manitz, thanks for your post - I'm sorry about your termination. Thanks for the encouragement about your children. I hope we will be able to be as forthright if the need arises. Your children sound wonderfully brave. Thanks for your support.

wow that's quick. earlier the better i feel so you don't sit about worrying. i didn't realise that you need to rest for about 24 hours after - i had to travel home quite far on the tube and had loads of tidying/sorting planned. They scan as they put the needle in which I found upsetting given what my decision would be, i didn't want to bond. Staff were great though and very understanding and it didn't take very long. Hope it's ok for you.

mrsbigz · 26/04/2011 14:33

wow - you'll have had the procedure i guess by the time you receive this. i hope you didn't find it too painful....most reports i've heard liken it to the amnio (which i had).
i think you've done the right thing opting for the cvs intead of waiting for the amnio. i was just out of the time limit for the cvs so HAD to wait for the amnio, and the 2 weeks (plus the additional time waiting for the results) were pretty much the hardest bit for me. i would certainly take the cvs if the situation were to arise again.
hope you're able to rest and put your feet up and get waited on hand and foot for the rest of the day/week - and good luck for when your results come back xx

tiokiko · 26/04/2011 18:53

Glad you've been able to get the CVS faster - the waiting must have been so tough even over those few days.

Hope it went OK today and you can rest now. Will be keeping my fingers crossed for you for the results.

evansmummy · 26/04/2011 21:04

Thanks all. Went well, uncomfortable but not overly so. Dh stayed home to look after the boy and my bf came with me. She said baby wriggled about a lot when needle went in, but she didn't tell me til after, so I didn't get to ask - is that quite normal? Why would it happen? I was planning to watch but had an attack of the nerves so couldn't in the end.

I'm quite sore now, I know it's normal but I'm still worried. Should get the early results on Thurs or Fri, that would be at least 12 days before I'd have got those from the amnio so I'm glad we decided to go ahead with CVS. Let's hope I don't have any complications.

froma different perspective - almost 9 years ago my eldest daughter was born with down syndrome. She also had a heart defect which was repaired at 8 weeks old and has given her no trouble since. She is a very active little girl who does all the things other girls do - goes to school, has friends to play, dancing swimming and generally loving life.

Her sisters adore her. She is actually the easiest of my children to raise. FOr us - downsyndrome was not the end of the world but rather opened the door to another world. The hardest part about her having down syndrome - is the attitude of others - that having an extra chromosome somehow makes her less of a person with potential and dreams.

evansmummy · 27/04/2011 09:10

eidsvold, your post is beautiful. And it is refreshing to have a positive perspective, not that others haven't, but your is particularly poignant. Thank you. Your attitude to it is amazing, I shall take inspiration from it.

evansmummy - sorry I missed your posts yesterday, but we were out and about all day, "keeping busy". I hope you are feeling better today and fingers crossed the results come back swiftly and with a positive outcome for you so you can move on from this scary stage.

We are in at 4pm today and feeling sick with worry, but will be glad to get through this bit.

evansmummy · 27/04/2011 13:19

cassandra, all the best for today. Push for CVS if that's what you want - at least you'll get to know sooner.

I am still sore and feeling sorry for myself after dh and I argued this morning. This wasb't supposed to happen this way...

I'll be thinking about you at 4. Hope all goes ok, let me know xx

cassandra, how did you get on this afternoon? Have been thinking of you

OP posts:
cassandraB · 27/04/2011 19:41

hi there. Thanks for thinking of us. We decided to wait 2 weeks for an amnio. A couple of reasons really, but mostly that scan wasn't massively clear to do the cvs and the doc clearly preferred us to wait and placenta is well-placed for a clear run at the amnio (for which the consultant's stats are really good). I can't quite put my finger on why, but I came away feeling a lot calmer than I have in weeks and 2 weeks didn't seem quite the hurdle it had before. Let's see how long I can hang on to the happy vibes.

I hope your day has improved and that you get good results through soon. Keep us posted.

I'm so nervous. I can't stop crying.

Evansmummy, I'm sorry for what you're going through. The waiting really is the worst part of these processes but you will get through it. Have a good cry as it's better than bottling it up.

Things that have helped me pass the time during recent times are playing mindless games on my phone, doing bits of sorting out in the house and doing crosswords.

Hope you don't have to wait too much longer.

evansmummy · 28/04/2011 16:04

Just got my results and got the all clear! I am so relieved, I an't even begin to describe it.

I seriously want to thank you all for the amazing support you've given me. MN is truly a special place n a crisis, and you are all truly special people. Thank you thank you thank you.

cassandra, let me know how you get on. I will continue thinking of you.

PamSco · 01/05/2011 08:33

Thank you to all who have shared their stories. It really helps me personally. I'm slightly higher risk due to age and about to embark on the scans and amnio when I get to the right stage and this thread has helped, reading what is in my head written by others. So thank you, thank you. And more importantly best of luck and all strength to those in the situation they dread.

evansmummy · 01/05/2011 11:20

Thanks, mrsbigz. I feel so much more relaxed now, for the first time really since I found out I was pregnant. It feels good!

PamSco, I hope all goes well for you and I would really recommend this board in general for amazing support and advice. Everyone here has been fantastic on my short but very stressful journey through the testing. I really wish you all the best xx
