Amnio on Tuesday 1:70 Down's

I got the phone call from the midwife yesterday about 5:30 to say I had a 1:70 risk for Down's. This was based on quad test as the baby wasn't lying properly for the sonographer to get the nuchal fold measurement. With my last pregnancy I was roughly 1:19,000 so this is quite a shock for us to say the least! I am only 26 and just feel a bit in shock about the whole situation! Has anyone else experienced this in their 20s? I didn't really get a chance to ask the midwife anything as I was a bit speechless so can anyone tell me how I will feel after the amino? Physically I mean. I have read about the procedure itself but am not sure what the recovery time will be like. Will I need the next day off work? Will I be ok looking after my 3 year old? I am trying to be as calm as possible about the results as it is 69 in 70 that things are ok.

I had a CVS done last week which I guess is similar procedure and had an amnio done a couple of years ago with my last pregnancy. Different situation to yours (I'm the carrier of a chromosone disorder- not DS) but wanted to reasure you about the procedure. A bit uncomfortable- not painful. I took the day after off work which they do advise but your certainly not bed ridden or anything- I had my 2 year old to look after and was fine. I'm still waiting for my results which will hopefully be back Monday. My thoughts are with you and your family during this emotionally turbulant time. X

Hello.I had an amnio in 2003. I was 37, so that was the reason.
I didn't feel anything much afterwards (except relief at nasty needle bit being over) was told to rest up for a few days. Which I did. I did get a few cramping pains a few days later so went back and had a check, but it was OK.
The needle is the worst bit, but it's over very quickly.
Hope everything goes well for you. Smile

Thanks Bucharest and milkysmum and I hope your results come back good too. So frustrating for you to have to wait until Monday for your results. I am mostly worried because my husband will be away and I don't know how much help I will need, physical or emotional really. I guess I need to just take it as it comes. Thanks for your support and advice :)

hi i had an amnio about 3 weeks ago. the procedure itself really isn't as bad as i'd imagined (and i hate needles!!!!) - it was uncomfortable for about 2 minutes, but certainly not painful. and they will scan you the whole time to ensure the needle is well away from your baby. i did take the next day off work, and had a 3yr old and 1yr old to look after. i was glad i took that day off, but i did feel ok, a little cramping the following evening but nothing too worrying. if you have a friend/family you could call upon for the day following day just for support then i would do that but if not, just try not to do too much. hope that your amnio and results come back fine - 69 out of 70 that all is okay are the odds to be focussed on here. good luck and keep us posted xx

Amnio is fine, and I had far lower odds than you. It's most likely that the results will be neg - 69 out of pregnancies like yours will be fine.

I know it's going to worry you anyway, of course it will; you're human.

Take someone with you to hold your hand. Also if it looks like the needle's about to nick your baby, remember it's a 2D image on the screen, but a 3D image in reality.

Best of luck!

Hi I had a result of 1:20 (nuchal and bloods) with my last pregnancy. I was 28 and that was with my 4th pregnancy, I really didnt expect it and DH almost didnt come to the scan as he had a trouble getting away from work. We had CVS test which came back clear.
As others have said 1:70 means 69 will be clear - I knwo thats easy to say after the even but I could only concentrate on the '1'.
Cope it all goes ok xx

Had my test yesterday instead of Tuesday and feeling a little sore today! On the upside have felt the baby kicking lots yesterday and today so I like to think s/he is reassuring me. I couldn't look at the needle but my mum said it was bigger than she expected! My consultant was brilliant and really reassured me. Definitely have to take it easy though! Hopefully will get the results tomorrow but probably Monday.
Thanks everyone for your nice comments x
