To ask if I can still have sex on HRT?

I mean surely I must??? I know this may seem a silly question considering millions of women are on HRT.

For context: I'm on a nightly HRT cream and a nightly Prasterone Intrarosa Pessary. I've read the leaflet and it's said that the pessary can take up to 24+hrs to dissolve and often the jelly type coating on the pessary applicator when I take it out after applying the new one each night is the leftover pessary from the night before. It also says to avoid sexual contact in order to avoid the hormones transferring to my partner. We've been together for over 20 years and have never used condoms so it would seem pretty strange to insist on having to use them now.

How do people have sex when they're on HRT pessaries? Should I just stop using it for a few days and essentially plan sex with my partner so I can make sure it's out of my body before intercourse?

Sounds like hrt from the dark ages. Can you change type?

CalistoNoSolo · 22/06/2023 11:14

And no, you shouldn't have sex if the pessary will get onto your partner's penis. You need too have a chat with your gp.

The pessary is intended to help with dryness and other issues I'm having down there. So not sure there's really another type that can help? From what I understand it's a fairly common type of HRT?

Can you use the pessary after sex? I am on one that after the initial two weeks of daily use I just use it twice a week, and have chosen days when we wouldn't usually dtd

Yes I can. But it's more the buildup of the hormones inside of me and leftover pessary residue from the night before passing onto partner that I'm worried about. These ones are nightly use ones which surprised me a bit because anyone else I know that uses a pessary only does do a couple times a week

Go onto The Irish Menopause Facebook page. They answer all questions like this. I find it invaluable for information. You don't have to be Irish or live in Ireland to be a member

I have patches (Evorol Sequi) and I'm definitely a lot less dry, so maybe you could ask to try those?

When I started HRT my GP discussed the various different methods and I discounted anything involving gels/creams etc as they all sounded a faff.

This really is a question for your GP.
