That's pretty shocking. But very american. They use the r word a lot more there than we do here. Doesn't make it right though.

VuvuzelaPlenticlew · 01/07/2010 10:06

Mmm, not OK with everyone -- didn't Rahm Emanuel get slapped on the wrist very publicly for saying "retarded" about something not so long ago? I think it was mentioned on The Daily Show.

VuvuzelaPlenticlew · 01/07/2010 10:07

They forgot their apostrophe, too. Morons two times over!

My first thought was US company, but the website is .co.uk. Maybe they've just used some US designs, but it might be worth pointing out to them that the language is unacceptable for a UK market?

Not nice, and horribly common on US websites and forums.

SloanyPony · 01/07/2010 10:15

If its that unacceptable, nobody will buy it, and they will probably stop selling it because of supply and demand.

YesMaam · 01/07/2010 10:30

Some of the original words (and words still used in the USA version) to the Black Eye Peas song "Lets get this party started" are actually "lets get retarded"...they changed it for the version over in the UK knowing those words were unacceptable here but generally considered acceptable in USA
So given it is for party invites I'd imagine it was connected to that...

JebusBuiltMyHotQuads · 01/07/2010 13:10

Ha YesMaam I was going to post exactly what you wrote about the Black Eye Peas

[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c04EMCF9lyI Here's] the original version if anyone is interested

So yes, I would assume that the cards are probably made in the US. Zazzle is bit like Amazon/eBay etc. Same site in different countries.

I don't even get it - is it meant to be a joke?

pinkdelight · 01/07/2010 14:23

I was flicking through a medical book the other day (friend is a psychiatrist) and the word 'retarded' was on virtually every page. Mate says it's still the term used in the profession, which is not remotely concerned with being PC. Not saying that's right - or that it's analogous with the way this card is using it, but seems context is everything and perhaps best not to judge a different cultural language by the meanings it has for you, here.

Pingpong · 01/07/2010 15:03

the thing with zazzle is that as another poster has commented is it is basically a US site with a UK branch.
People upload their invite/cards etc and then they are visable for all to see. I don't think there is any moderation but don't use them if you don't like their style. There are plenty other upload and print type sites. Photobox are pretty good and you don't get to see everyone else's offensive stuff.
