To think that you don't need a week to pay your rent

Me and DP have lodgers. The house is his so he sorts out the finances. He asks that the rent is paid within the first week of the months. I think this is far too wishywashy and there should be an actual date, ie 1st working day of the month. This is how it worked when i've been in rented accommodation. DP says that it's fair to give a week to pay the rent. We are having problems with one of the lodgers consistently paying the rent in the 3rd week of the month. I think part of the problem is that the '1st week' thing means there's less sense of urgency for the lodgers with the rent so they are more likely to push it.

AIBU to think that rent should be paid on a set date?

YANBU

A set date should be provided...thats a proper deadline

"first week of the month" IS to wishy washy!

yes, it does seem that the 3rd week lodger is taking the piss, or finding it hard to get the money together - he needs a weekly rent - that way if he struggles to get the full amount, then it's easier for him to pay in smaller chunks.

but your DP does need to put a specific date on it. the first Friday, or the 7th of the month, if he wants to give them a week to pay.

btw, if they pay every month, surely they're expecting it???? why do you need a week when you pay every month?

YANBU - you need a set date.

nickelbabe - I have no idea why they need a week to prepare for paying rent!

The problem is that when he first bought the house, DP had a friend as a lodger so didn't want to be too strict. Now we have strangers as lodgers but he hasn't changed his behaviour. Consequently, we have a lodger who comes home with designer shopping bags every week, eats out most nights but doesn't pay the rent on time and DP won't say anything to her. I'm bloody fed up of her taking advantage and with the next lot of lodgers I'm going to insist on a much stricter contract.
